Kokeshi Doll - Yoshio Otani
Isn't she lovely! I think this piece represents beauty in one its most simple forms. From the shading of color variations on her kimono to the beauty of the wood itself, this little doll is a true representation of art. The character of the wood is shown at every angle and the hair literally goes against the grain (corny, I know) highlighting its depth of color.
She is only 4.25 inches tall and measures 3.5 across the base. My research revealed that this piece was created by Yoshio Otani (seal on base). Her exact age is unknown but thought to be from the mid to late 20th century.
There is one small scuff mark at the crown of her head near the back, but it is difficult to capture in pictures. (Please see picture of her back.)
