Burmese Kalaga Tapestry Wall Hanging - Vintage
This beautiful wall hanging dates to the 2nd half of the 20th century. It is skillfully crafted of black and red velvet along with various colors of linen making up a beautiful image of clouds above and grass in front of an impressive depiction of the Mandalay Palace. The revered cultural symbols of the hare and the peacock float on either side, likely representing the moon (hare) and sun (peacock), while also giving honor the and the state. The image is enhanced by red, gold, bronze and silver metallic threads, silver and gold sequins, colored beads for highlights.
The tapestry has been mounted onto a wood panel and framed in black wood. This is a massive piece, measuring 38 x 48 inches.
