19th C Bleu de Hue Horse and Dragon Miniature Bowls

Sale price Price $100.00 Regular price

This pair of 19th Century Bleu de Hue Dish depict a horse and a dragon, two highly revered symbols in both the Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, in underglaze blue decoration. They are shown flying, surrounded by stylized clouds and flames. A wave motif encircles a symbol for balance in the middle. There are four bats on the exterior which combine with the base mark depicting a bat, to represent the five blessings: "long life, wealth, health, love of virtue and a peaceful death" (as noted by the British Museum).

The base is marked in underglaze with what appears to be a bat combined with a peach. This type of mark was used beginning in the Kangxi period but more frequently in the Daoguang period, dating the plate to the early 19th century. There is no damage.

The weight shown gives consideration to the extra padding necessary for safe shipping. The bowl has a diameter of approximately 2.5 inches.
