19th Century Lacquer and Mother of Pearl Box
This one is a real find! This 19th Century Lacquer and Mother of Pearl Scholar's Box features a phoenix in a landscape scene with butterflies fluttering around. Mother of pearl is also used to create the key pattern border on the lid as well as the flowers and scrolling foliage on the sides of the box. The interior of the box is decorated with more flowers, scrolls, and birds in flight. The water well is made of brass and there are individual spaces for the ink block and brushes.
The box dates to the 19th century. There is some damage including a crack in the box along one side in addition to some loss of lacquer. There are definite signs of use and age.
The box measures 10 x 6.75 x 2.5 inches.
