This Vintage Ukrainian Black Pottery Ewer was made during the revival period which began in 1991 after the Soviet Union period ended. The black color is obtained by essentially smoking the clay by blocking all openings in the kiln, trapping the smoke inside. Traditionally, the black clay pottery of the Ukraine is used for daily household purposes. This piece is signed and dated "1992".
There appears to be some white residue adhering to the ewer. It has been left in place to avoid damaging the pot. The ewer is 9 inches tall and approximately 5 inches wide.
